@cambridgeuniversity: The UK government has announced plans to introduce a social media ban for under-16s by spring 2027. Professor Sander van der Linden shares his reaction to today's news, and measures it against the evidence we already have about social media restrictions. I think as adults the ban, at minimum, communicates to kids that these spaces are potentially very dangerous. Yes most kids will get around it, but I feel it still helps frames it on a society level

It’s a start. I’m glad they are taking a stand. It has got beyond the power of parents to manage. I want children protected and away from it for some time in their lives. Let’s see how it develops.

People talk about healthy democracy as if there is such a thing , especially with private sectors being more wealthier than governments.

I am actually curious how a total ban from social media is possible if it’s part of home education! How can the government be allowed to decide at what age I teach my children about social media and how I do it but they can’t enforce any kind of curriculum for other important skills like reading, writing etc?

Well said by Cambridge University. The challenge is not whether we embrace technology, but how we protect the most vulnerable while doing so. Children and young people are growing up in a digital environment shaped by powerful algorithms and AI systems. Societies that encourage innovation while safeguarding their citizens demonstrate foresight, responsibility, and sound governance. There is much to learn from this approach.

It’s a corrective measure. Social media is an engineered ecosystem that constantly triggers dopamine and engagement. Now we have sufficient body of research to prove the scale of damages caused by social media on the cognitive and affective development of the kids. Many countries have started rolling back on the use tech at schools too.
