A coup attempt in Niger collapsed in under 48 hours, and the mutineers surrendered on state television. The assault began on the night of 28–29 August, when troops moved on the capital and opened fire at Air Base 101. The presidential guard repelled an attack on the palace, and an attempt to seize state television also failed. By Sunday the airbase had been fully retaken, three security sources said, after the government called in Russia's Africa Corps. State television broadcast footage of mutineers surrendering with their hands raised. As calm returned, hundreds of people gathered in Niamey to show support for the government and its institutions, and to denounce the imperialist interests they say lie behind repeated coup attempts. Algeria backed the government publicly, expressing "full solidarity and firm support". Niger's presidency said Algiers delivered four fighter jets, a transport aircraft and a refuelling tanker on Sunday. Gen Abdourahamane Tiani, who took power in July 2023, has since expelled French troops, ended a US military agreement and nationalized the Somaïr uranium mine, previously operated by France's Orano. #Niger #AES
