I don’t think she grew up there. I assume that her mother knew about the backrooms before Async. She explored, saw too much, with no body else to talk to about it she fell into a state of mental decline. When she had Mary she dedicated herself to keeping Mary away from the backrooms hence her immense control, protection and fear. She told Mary stories though Mary didn’t believe her. When she hears Clarke telling her about the backrooms, supposedly reciting the same details as her mother told her, she becomes fearful and shocked explaining why it felt as though she had been there before. She hadn’t but she had been told about it.

If you watch closely, every space in the film is liminal because a part of the point of the movie is that the real world has become just as empty and detached for Clarke as the backrooms are because he’s stuck in a cycle of destructive behaviors that alienates him from other people.

Also in the beginning of the movie wham Mary and her mother are putting their handprints in the concrete, Mary’s mother zones out. I think it’s because it reminds Mary’s mother of the entrance to the backrooms and how it’s kind of like pushing your hand through the concrete

I think it was meant to show how similar traumatic memories are to the backrooms, not necessarily how she lived in the backrooms.
