@rawmeash: Bay Area activists groups joined Black Alliance for Peace to ask for a boycott of US games. Whether you are a sports fan or not there’s no denying that The World Cup brings people of the globe together and celebrates the brilliance and athleticism of the best players. Sports are a benign substitute for war. It satisfies the urge for competition and tribal affiliation that instead of going after each other with weapons we have our most skilled and fittest young men battle each other with a ball. Soccer has become the world game because it didn’t need so much equipment. Any bunch of kids on any street corner or empty field could kick around a ball and fancy themselves the next maradona. We’re not out here to deny that, to deny the great skills involved here, to kill the joy the average fan feels watching their chosen team win. We are not here to tell Countries that have suffered under colonialism such as Tunisia and Haiti and Iran that they can’t have a moment to shine on the world stage. We’re not here to deny people a bit of fun and football, I just heard with the fans new football chant, We are here to say that Hosting a world cup means that you are opening your home to the rest of the world. If you can’t handle the guest list. you don’t get to host the party. We’re here to say that FIFA should have kept the game in Mexico and Canada.
