In my opinion, yes, there were some shots to the back of the head. If it was only one or two, I'd be fine with calling them accidental, but Gane landed several. Herb Dean probably should've warned him or at least acknowledged it. That said, it doesn't change the fact that Alex got dropped and finished by Gane. I also understand why Herb didn't immediately stop the fight. Alex was already hurt and Gane was in the middle of finishing him. If Herb had stepped in right then because of the illegal shots, it could've been controversial since Alex was already in serious trouble. It felt like Herb was put in a difficult position where the only real option was to let the sequence play out unless Alex recovered or the fight was officially stopped. So yes, Gane deserves criticism for those shots, but the result itself doesn't suddenly change because of them. And honestly, it's kind of funny seeing Alex break character after the loss—like when he said a hacker posted that UFC story after his previous defeat. 🤣
