Hope it was silicone Nick, caulk isn't waterproof. 😉 To get it tidy for beginners you can always masking tape it and then silicone or caulk.

been doing my own DYI for years. maybe tape off the edges an 1/8"from the edges of the open gaps, then chalk, remove tape and spit on your finger and softly level the edges with it.
