@walk.with.mi: The Terracotta Army was created more than 2000 years ago for China's first emperor, who believed he would need an army to protect him in the afterlife. More than 8,000 life-sized warriors have been discovered and what makes them remarkable is that each one is different, with unique facial features, hairstyles, armor and uniforms that reflect their rank and role. The entire site remained buried for over 2,000 years until it was accidentally discovered by farmers digging a well near Xi'an in 1974.
