@natnirch: On this episode of “Double standards for cheer coaches”— being given proper/functional safety equipment that was way over due only for it to be used against the team when they don’t do what the higher ups want, regardless of what’s best for the athletes. #cheerleading #cheertok #cheercoach
Although sideline is actually part of the job. Mot because they bought mats, but because that’s part of the sport. At least in our school. Comp season we split the squad so we trade off bball games but we use football games to train our stunts and stuff. Camp days are long but it’s part of our sport.

football helmets actually expire... must be inspected annually. cheer mats do not expire.

we skipped a football game this past season because it was the night before state....i think only reason we didn't get pushback was because we won. but still I totally feel this situation.

The unfortunate reality is that cheer exists at *most* schools to "perform" at other sporting events, especially at your average school district. I say this as a former D3 college cheerleader and mom to a current middle school sideline cheerleader. In a lot of school settings (vs comp),the entire schedule revolves around football and basketball games. The AD in our district would never approve missing a varsity game because of camp, competition, showcase, community festival, etc. The cheer squad's main purpose is to encourage school spirit and support the athletic teams (football, basketball etc). "Cheering" for a team is the fundamental difference between sideline and comp.

I love when they talk about prioritizing Jim space for sports that are in season. But we are always in season. We go straight from football to basketball to tryouts to summer preparation for football and going to UcA camp and competition practice. Yeah we still get bumped during the summer for sports that are not in season.

so a few things...
1.. football players don't sign up for football to go and support girls soccer.
2.. cheerleaders job is LITERALLY to support school athletics. If I was your A.D I would definitely be looking at you strange if you asked, "is it ok if cheerleaders miss the football game?"
I agree there is a lot of double standards, but this was not a good example.

How about hey, we moved some baskets into the cafeteria and the basketball team can practice in there for now.
