Russ was fighting a baseless fight against Magnus. The two just happened to be in an unfortunate position during the horus heresy. i still blame the emperor for the outcome though, Big E should have done better

you forgot to add the part were Russ wounded Horus in that fight. Horus never managed to fully recover from that fight making him weaker during the siege of Terra.

Russ didn’t go after Horus to kill him. If you read Wolfsbane he repeatedly states he is just trying to wound him. Paraphrasing a lot here but he’s told by warp visions that he has to wound Horus so the traitors can’t win. He states that before he was juiced up Horus is one of three primarchs that might beat him so he knows he can’t kill him. But he does win technically but because by this point Russ has grown and is no longer the mindless executioner he hesitates and that’s when Horus turns the fight. Also the space wolves being set against the thousands sons as the first act of the heresy was because the chaos powers viewed the wolves and sons as the biggest threat to the heresy. The thousands sons being the only ones who could challenge them in the warp since chaos made the edict of Nikea pass. And the wolves being the biggest threat to the physical side of the heresy

well he was a fool to believe Horus. Prospero wasnt meant to be destroyed but because russ already had some hate against magnus, he was easily deceived by horus into annihilating Propero and pushing magnus and the thousand suns into the warp. had he done exactly what the emperor told him (to simple arrest Magnus), then someone could have sat on that throne while the Emperor sorted Horus out. but then again, we wouldnt have the whole story of 30k to 40k
