Prayer is the greatest practical pillar of Islam after the two testimonies of faith, and it is the act of worship that connects the servant with his Lord every day and night. Allah, the Exalted, made it obligatory for Muslims five times a day, and made it a means to attain His pleasure and forgiveness, and a way for hearts to find tranquility and behavior to be upright. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Perform the prayer as you have seen me perform it.” Before beginning the prayer, a Muslim should purify himself with wudu, make sure his garment and place are clean, cover his awrah, and face the qiblah. Then he makes the intention in his heart to perform the prayer he wants, without the need to say it out loud. He begins the prayer with the opening takbir, saying: “Allahu Akbar,” then recites the opening supplication (du‘a al‑istiftah) if he wishes, and after that recites Surah al‑Fatiha in every rak‘ah, for it is a pillar without which the prayer is invalid. It is recommended to recite whatever one can of the Noble Qur’an in the first two rak‘ahs. Then he moves to bowing (ruku‘) with humility and glorification of Allah, the Exalted, placing his hands on his knees and saying: “Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.” After bowing, he raises his head upright and says: “Allah hears those who praise Him,” then says: “Our Lord, to You belongs all praise.” After that he prostrates (sujud) to Allah, the Exalted, placing his forehead, nose, hands, knees, and the toes of his feet on the ground, and says: “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” Between the two prostrations he sits a short sitting and says: “My Lord, forgive me.” These actions are repeated in all rak‘ahs according to the number of rak‘ahs of the prayer. When sitting for the final time, he recites the Tashahhud and the Ibrahimic prayer, then concludes his prayer with the salam to his right and left, saying: “As‑salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah.” Among the essential pillars of the prayer are: standing for those who are able, the opening takbir, reciting al‑Fatiha, bowing (ruku‘), standing up from it, prostration (sujud), sitting between the two prostrations, tranquility in all pillars, the final Tashahhud, sending prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, and the salam. Among the recommended sunnahs are: raising the hands when saying takbir, placing the right hand over the left, reciting the opening supplication, reflecting on the meanings of the verses, and achieving humility during the prayer. Prayer is not just words and actions performed, but a noble act of worship that purifies the soul, lights up the heart, and strengthens the connection with Allah, the Exalted.
