The prosecution detailed that Merrikin's illicit behavior was uncovered entirely due to the actions of his own wife. Suspecting that her husband was having an extra-marital affair with another adult woman, she covertly installed a hidden camera inside his office. Upon auditing the captured video footage, she was met with shock and dismay to find that Merrikin was instead sexually abusing a child. The discovery prompted immediate contact with law enforcement and led directly to his arrest.
