The concern starts when a straw becomes chipped, cracked, or damaged. If a fragment breaks off and is swallowed, it can act like a sharp foreign body and injure the mouth, throat, or digestive tract. In rare cases, a fragment can also enter the airway and cause choking or breathing problems. If a glass straw is damaged, replace it.
