@travismayo: Philosopher Paul Grice discovered that the literal meaning of what someone says is almost never the actual message. He called the gap between what's said and what's communicated conversational implicature. And once you understand how it works, you start hearing every conversation differently. There was what you said. And there was what you communicated. Those two things have never been exactly the same. #TravisMayo #learning #PaulGrice #Language #HiddenMeaning

I learned about this in a critical thinking course. The implicature example they used was "Bob didn't do drugs at work today." 😳

this is why having conversations is extremely difficult for me. for me, it's just the words that come out of my mouth that are the message. trying to perform in a way to be understood "between the lines" is exhausting and sometimes impossible

that sounds like something that I read in history. it sounds like a protocol that was established. and I think it was needed for the people that contribute to sociality. cooperative principal.

I have ADHD. And so everything I say. is intentionally calculated to intend the most transparency possible so I don't misrepresent or under value my message, entirely! Also. I over explain and end up using three analogies, 4 different life examples and at least 2 separate outcomes that I also explain in unnecessary detail... and that's where I realise I've gone too far and forgot what I was even talking about ... 🤷‍♂️

The problem is that another statement is just as true: the gap between what was said and what you understood is your own history...

So if I asked the cashier, I'd like some ketchup with those fries. That's not actually what I mean. Wow that's deep.

To put this in terms of a "discovery" is 1) inaccurate (did all humans before grice not realize that people can say what they don't mean?) and 2) hilarious if this were actually true

and for those of us that fill the gaps when we are speaking or ask Clarifying questions because being accurate is valued.... we're criticized for "poor reading of intention". No, we know there are MANY options of intention and need others to be more specific, leave fewer gaps.

I call it background information. picture a book with all the writing, that is the foreground information. all the white space is the "background information". sometimes, what's NOT said, can be more important than what WAS said

Sure that's true, but communication never relies only on what is said. Tonality, gesture, facial expression and glance are as many indicators of what is meant. Therefore those rules seems really relevant about langage in itself.

For me that's pretty obvious. When I ask some how the person feels and get the answer "actually I'm fine", I know something is missing because why only "actually"? But I do not understand some random thing in this case but ask for clarification and details.

Something I’ve studied all my life, practically speaking. Paul’s analysis and your summation of his findings resonates with my own experience with people in general. Leveraging this tool uncovers so much in relational matters with people. Amazing stuff sir!
