Look all I’m saying is one of the first times I googled something for myself was when I was 11 and I looked up what was happening at Abu Grahib as it was happening. The ability to learn about these atrocities is at all of our fingertips and people choose not to look.

As someone who’s 44 years old and lived through these events; seeing history and knowledge dissolve in real time is surreal.

it’s also wild how many people are saying “well I, an average person, didn’t know about this so who cares” but Dean is a political commentator and people look to him to get their news + political takes. He should want to actively learn these things instead of being stuck, especially if he wants to pursue politics for life (it’s constant learning). I learned about Abu Ghraib while I was getting my degree in political science and international affairs + joined an anti-war book club. Seeking knowledge and being curious seems to be a dying trait these days 😭

Just to tack on: high school social studies/history curricula is notoriously bad at getting to/covering the recent past, which is part of the problem as well.

Also, PBS Frontline has a whole learning capsule about Abu Ghraib featuring a documentary, teacher’s guide, lesson plans, and activities that is publicly available for anyone who want to learn more about this episode in American history.

I completely agree with you, but the statement "knowledge has never been more accessible" made me reflect on how that is becoming less and less true 😭

I completely agree that he should now educate himself on it. But, I don’t think this should be a purity test. Just like how you don’t need to know the ins and outs of health insurance to be able to talk about universal healthcare (with a platform), I don’t think you need to necessarily know everything the US has done to talk about politics. I also disagree with the statement that Dean sees himself or others view him as an authority figure in politics.

I would bet that there’s many people (maybe including dean, idk i couldn’t find the clip that started this discourse) who knew about abu ghraib and just didn’t know the name

Social epistemology encourages us to think about whether or not we have access to information that would allow us to avoid making mistakes like these to begin with.

and while seeking out that new knowledge, constantly ask why that knowledge was hidden to begin with, who benefits, etc.
