Lukewarm take: Renee is the reason Bella has such poor relationships with other women — and consequentially why she wants an older brother instead of an older sister even tho theoretically, Bella still would’ve been the burden and caretaker in her mother’s home even with a big bro. She can’t trust women to actually be protectors, so she has placed men in that role as her fantasy in having no consistent male role models growing up. (Visiting Charlie a few times doesn’t count!)

there was also the line in Midnight Sun where Edward reads Carlisle's thoughts after the van incident and Carlisle makes a mental comment about how surprised he was to see Bella as okay as she was because she had so many minor injuries to her skull and other bones. he was thinking something like how many times did Renee drop Bella when she was young

The tragedy of it all is that if Bella somehow did end up having an older brother she still would’ve ended up taking care of Renee. The brother would’ve been spousified by Renee and Bella would’ve been a friend/caretaker/competition. Who’s to say the brother wouldn’t have chosen to live with Charlie just to not have to deal with Renee’s high maintenance? The sad fact is that even if Bella did have someone else to look after her, unless they were also an adult, she would’ve still been severely neglected.

The fanfics I read back in the day with an incredibly neglected Bella always rang so true. Electric shut off. No food in the fridge. No doctor check ups. Her mom disappearing for days. I don’t think it fits that Renee did it out of malice, but neglect? Yeah, I can see that. Parentification? For sure.
