A New Mexico woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after admitting she killed her husband and spent months trying to hide what happened. Prosecutors said Deana Thetford shot her husband, Craig Thetford, during an argument inside their Cloudcroft home in early 2025. After his death, investigators say she concealed his body in the carport, wrapped the remains in plastic and a rug, and repeatedly gave family members and law enforcement conflicting stories about where he had gone. According to prosecutors, Craig’s family reported him missing after months without hearing from him. Investigators eventually uncovered evidence that Deana had allegedly impersonated her husband through text messages and social media messages while also forging documents in an effort to make it appear he was still alive. She ultimately pleaded guilty to second degree murder, tampering with evidence, and forgery before receiving her 18 year sentence. Do you think the sentence fits the crime? Prosecutors now say they believe a Virginia woman may have still been alive when her husband allegedly sealed her inside a freezer. Lina Maria Guerra Echavarria, 39, was reported missing before her body was discovered inside a freezer in the couple’s apartment. Authorities allege she suffered blunt-force trauma and asphyxiation, and investigators say new evidence has raised questions about whether she was still alive when she was placed inside the freezer. Her husband, David Varela, has been charged with first-degree murder and concealing a dead body. During a recent court hearing, prosecutors revealed the disturbing new theory based on autopsy findings, while arguing that Varela should remain behind bars. A judge denied bond, citing concerns about public safety and the risk of flight as the case continues to unfold. What are your thoughts on this case?
