Deathtrap on the Dawhenya–Water Works Road Needs Urgent Attention Residents and road users are calling for the immediate restoration of a deteriorating bridge on the main Dawhenya–Water Works Road within the Ningo-Prampram District. The bridge, located between the Deeper Life Prayer Grounds and Ocean Spring Water Company, has become a serious danger to motorists, pedestrians, and residents. The concrete structure beneath the road surface has broken apart, creating a massive cavity underneath the bridge. Although the road surface remains in place, it is severely weakened and at risk of collapsing at any moment. This problem did not occur overnight. For approximately one year, the bridge has shown signs of deterioration, gradually worsening over time. Residents and frequent road users have observed the damage increasing steadily, yet little or no action has been taken to address the situation. Unfortunately, the recent heavy rains have significantly worsened the condition of the bridge, accelerating the erosion beneath the road and increasing the likelihood of a complete collapse. The situation is particularly dangerous at night because there are no streetlights in that section of the road. The area is extremely dark, making it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to identify the danger ahead. Anyone unfamiliar with the road could easily drive or walk into the affected area, potentially resulting in serious injury or loss of life. Residents fear that with the next heavy rainfall, the weakened bridge could completely cave in, cutting off the road and disrupting transportation between communities. Such a collapse would affect daily commuting, business activities, access to schools, emergency services, and the movement of people within the district. What is most concerning is that the relevant authorities have been aware of the situation for some time. The deterioration was evident long before it reached its current critical state. Had timely intervention and maintenance works been carried out when the first signs of damage appeared, the bridge might not have deteriorated to this dangerous level. Instead, the problem was allowed to worsen until it became a major public safety threat. Officials from the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly have reportedly inspected the site, yet no meaningful action has been taken to address the danger. Awetsɛ Samuel Nartey George, is also aware of the issue, but residents are still waiting for a concrete response and intervention. This is not merely an infrastructure problem; it is a public safety emergency. Authorities must act immediately to secure the area, install warning signs and temporary barriers, provide street lighting, and commence urgent repair works before a tragic accident occurs. Residents are therefore appealing to the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and all relevant stakeholders to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves. Immediate action should be taken now before lives are lost and the road becomes completely impassable. The people of Dawhenya and the surrounding communities deserve safe roads, responsive leadership, and prompt attention to critical infrastructure challenges. Preventive action should have been taken months ago. The time to act is now—before this avoidable danger turns into a preventable tragedy.
