Somaliland is an independent and self-governing nation that separated from the failed government still known as Somalia. Somaliland gained its independence from British colonial rule in 1960. After that, it united with the former Italian-administered Somalia, even though Somaliland had already been independent for four days. Following the union, many people in Somaliland believe they faced serious hardships, including violence, loss of property, and displacement, with many families fleeing to Ethiopia. Because of these experiences, Somaliland declared the restoration of its independence again in 1991. Since then, Somaliland has held one-person-one-vote elections, had several presidents, and built different security institutions to maintain peace and stability. Supporters describe Somaliland as one of the more stable and secure places in the Horn of Africa because of its governance and strategic location near the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Supporters also call on the international community to recognize Somaliland as an independent African state, while encouraging Somalia to focus on strengthening peace and governance within its own territories.
