@fit.mom.carlyn: Things to keep your child from being ostracized next school year and to fit in, the summer edition. Just a few ideas to tackle now while school is out. #christiantiktok #parents #kids #school #teacher
Yes, my son is always contrarian, even when it doesn’t make sense, and I let him know that’s not an attractive personality trait.

I would love if you could help with contrarian kids. I have a son and he’s going into 4th grade and I’m trying to help him.

I tell my daughter “you’re not annoying, this behavior is/can come off as annoying” and give her ideas on how to stop. She is sensitive so I have to start it with validation

As a teacher of grades 3 and 4, this is so important. We work on friendship skills, but the kid who squawks like a velociraptor and has never been told it’s annoying finds out fast as his classmates mature past it. Grades 1&2 are forgiving, but by 3 and 4, they start to notice excessive annoyances and actively avoid kids who do them. Children will either hear it from you, or they’ll hear it from their peers.

schools genuinely need to start investigating for neglect if a kid doesn’t know how to properly maintain basic hygiene

My daughter kept being put in the goal during her soccer games but wasn't being instructed about the position during practice. The minute I saw the toll it was taking on her confidence, I found a goalie from the local university's women's team and hired her for private lessons. It has been so worth it. I'm not looking to make her a superstar, I want to build confidence and perseverance, and for it to continue to be a fun activity! If she doesn’t want to play next season, I will find a way to best support her chosen path!

I remember when my stepson started high school, he told me that he wanted to smell good when people walked past him. So I gave him $200 to totally redo his hygiene routines. He’s graduated now but doing that for him set him up greatly!

Big kids too. Parents sort of take a back seat with teens. The way I still do a 3 step acne care routine with my older boys every night… I check ears, nails, teeth… bi weekly haircuts. Check their clothes for stains and holes… all the things.

MAKE THEM READDDDD AND WRITE THINGS!!! They will hate it at first and you will have to reward them but slowly introduce books that are made into movies and use that. As a kid that always motivated me to read.

I think that an important rule to remember is if something is cute now but will be rude or unnacceptable in a few years, nip it in the bud

I completely agree with you on all of this. My oldest is 11 years old and wanted to do baseball a year ago. All the kids in the area had been doing baseball for several years so I knew he would not be the best on his team so we started him in the summer doing different baseball camp so he could get the skills. He’s still not the best, but at least it built his confidence.

The little habits tips are huge. Yes, we’re all learning together in kinder and few kids are social superstars at this age. But I’ve actively seen kids get quietly shunned after snatching, taking up class time by being defiant, not respecting personal space or tattling one too many times. If it’s happening often and does not change, even little kids stop being forgiving and decide it’s not worth the trouble. They won’t gang up on the kid being annoying, but partner work, carpet time, and free play are pretty telling. Remember: even age-appropriate behaviors can be annoying and lose a kid friends, so working through them at home is huge!

I like to make showering appealing with good smelling products. I know it’s small but it has helped. I had him pick out all his care stuff.

As a teacher and a parent I 💯 endorse this. My 6 year old used to do annoying things, my husband was the one that made him stop it. He did explain 1. It was annoying 2. Annoying people don’t have a lot of friends. I love the encouragement for sports. I would say if they aren’t into sports, get their cardiovascular level up. It helps them socially during recess/ gym class if they can keep up with the other kids.

My daughter is going to middle school and I am sooooo stressed about her having the “right” book bag, water bottle, etc. I’m so stressed. 😫 My daughter is 11 never wanted to do anything now she wants to and has zero experience to get on a team. I feel so bad.
