@inventionontt: Original Video Credit: IG/jacobkrug_2024 A constant stream of iron ore pellets pours down a massive steel chute and directly into the cargo hold of a Great Lakes freighter. What looks simple from the outside is actually part of one of the most efficient bulk loading systems ever built. The pellets are stored in enormous pockets high above the dock after arriving by rail. When loading begins, operators lower a chute into the ship's cargo hatch and open gates beneath the storage bins, allowing gravity to do almost all of the work. This process takes place at the historic Presque Isle Ore Dock in Marquette, Michigan. By storing material above the vessel and carefully controlling the flow, these towering structures can load vast quantities of taconite pellets into freighters in just a matter of hours with no conveyor belts required at the loading point.
