Okay, but my question is why is this a rule? What does it accomplish? What does it help us with the game if you are in the wrong spot when you take a shot?

its a good explanation! only critisism id give is i would say its last man instead of defender as it can be any one and back line instead of goal

The goalkeeper do count as a defender so you should not be infront of the last two defenders and also if you were to pass the ball backwards to your teamate who is technically in a offside position it would not be offside

Great explanation 👏
I found it helped to know why... and that is to stop the strikers from hanging around in front of the goal waiting to receive the ball and score in the net. They have to be in the game and the other side of at least one defender

You did a great job explaining it so casual viewers can understand. It covers 99% of the cases. To be precise and to make sense of the other 1%, the definition is “between the opposing team goal line and the ball”, meaning that if the player receiving the ball was actually behind the ball line, he will be onside no matter what. (e.g. if the full back cross the ball close to the goal line and the striker taps in, the striker will probably be behind the ball and will be onside) (another minor detail that will account for 0.5% or less is that the rule says it is the penultimate defender. The keeper is basically assumed but there are situations that he is far out there for some reason and we have to check if there are 2 defenders)
