OMG! Yes! I was babysitting an infant, 5 and 7 year old all summer, plus cooking their 3 meals, cleaning and doing laundry. I then transitioned to cooking meals for my family full time. I have been a grown up my whole life. I’m burned out

I’m not even interested in being a grandparent in the future because I’m too tired from being sandwiched between aging parents and adult kids that aren’t quite independent and working full time

The realization that our entire identity became tied to being useful is completely profound. Society trains us so early to measure our worth entirely by what we provide for others. This specific mindset requires genuine intention to unlearn.

All the boomer parents just loved you taking care of their responsibilities gave them more time to think and do things about themselves. Duh.

By 10 I was taking care of my dad. By 13 I was grocery shopping alone and running a household. 42 in a few days and at 40 I was so burnt out.

I always rebelled against being responsible and my family always joked about how I was not your normal first born. I was wild, difficult and all over the place. I did babysit though / because I wanted money! 😂

aGen Jones experienced this, too. We watched our mother's return/join the workforce. Suddenly, we needed to be more mature and responsible.

I wish people would recognize what our young men had to accomplish for love and attention, too.

Yep, I was not only babysitting my siblings at 11 (new baby sister, 3 yo, & 8 yo), I was also babysitting other families children. Had my first tax paying job watching kids for mom’s Bible studies (I built a several weeks long curriculum to teach Bible lessons along with a craft aligned with the weekly lessons) before I was even a teenager. Until now, I haven’t stopped to think about this led to my self worth being tied to being needed and useful. I’ve thought I’ve just been in my masculine b/c I needed control following my parents finally getting divorced when I was 16/17. My usefulness job & hyper-responsibility really started way before that.
