@dariusryankadem: Relational thinking isn't just a math thing. It's everything. It's wherever a child is learning. You can give them the rule, or you can let them understand why it's there. So they understand the relationship. A child told "say sorry" learns to say sorry. A child who works out why the other kid is upset learns what sorry is for. One produces the word on cue. The other understands the thing underneath it. It's the same with feelings. A child told "stop crying, you're fine" learns to go quiet. A child helped to work out what they're feeling and why learns to read themselves and that stays with them, where the instruction to go quiet doesn't. And it's the same with rules. "Because I said so" gets you obedience while you're watching. A child who understands why the rule exists can apply it when you're not in the room. It's the same principle every time. You can hand them the answer, or you can let them understand it. Beacause understanding only ever comes from questioning. The child who's allowed to ask why builds something they can stand on. The child who's only given answers never learns to ask in the first place.
