Geniunly why is all book content about buying books. Why does no one go to the library? Why do you have beef with the library. I get buying books too but like borrow it first, read it & then buy it if you really liked the book.

while i agree that the idea of the thought daughter has become an aesthetic and a concept that brands and influencers profit off of, i don't think that its rise in mainstream popularity is a bad thing ! as you said, it encourages self-reflection, education, and engagement with the arts and humanities. if we allow these things to become popular in an authentic way, disregarding performative content that encourages over-consumption and engaging only with the trend in a mindful manner, it can be so much more impactful on the individual. you can choose which side of the algorithm you want to be on

i really do think this is basically the same for every other aesthetic. whether it is clean girl or thought daughter, you’ll always look up things to purchase, movies to watch and books to read in order to acquire a certain aesthetic. perhaps it encourages consumerism but so does every other style and perspective.

huh, thats true. before reading the content, i stopped and asked myself "how is a thought daughter capitalist?" to see if we would have the same answer. turns out we did! my point is that, once you mentioned it, it made a lot of sense - but until you proposed the question, i had never thought about it. keep up with this work!!

Usually when I buy books I think about it as supporting the author but you have a point

Tbh i never saw being a thought daughter as an aesthetic. I just think a lot and try to educate myself as much as possible. 99% of the media i own is pirated. I just need fuel for my mind, which is really the only way I consume. But consumption can also be going out, striving for experiences, walking through villages, studying people, and observing nature. All that can add colors to your palette. That’s my experience. 🫶🏻

wouldn’t this apply to any aesthetic / persona / whatever you call it? what makes the “thought daughter” persona uniquely capitalist?

basically the plot of the secret history that most people miss 💔 the dark academia/thought daughter/booktok communities are based on a consumist approach of education and knowledge, also kind of eurocentric given how everything promoted is from the western world. but tbh every single hobby/aesthetic falls into consumerism the moment it becomes trendy. people will always try to make profit of things, and now it's not only of pop culture but thanks to the internet any sub culture can be turned into a market. it's kind of sad honestly, to not be able to enjoy a community without capitalism taking it away from you and offering it as a product to buy instead
