Using his charm and intelligence, Joe manipulates situations to insert himself into Beck’s life, presenting himself as the perfect boyfriend. As their relationship deepens, Joe begins to see obstacles in his way, such as Beck’s friends and her casual boyfriend, Benji Ashby. Determined to protect his relationship and ensure that Beck stays with him, Joe resorts to extreme measures, including kidnapping and murder, to eliminate anyone he sees as a threat. Meanwhile, Joe also develops a protective relationship with Paco, a young boy who lives in the same building and suffers from his mother’s neglect and his stepfather’s abuse. Joe sees Paco as a younger version of himself and tries to protect him, justifying his violent actions as a way to save those he loves. As the season progresses, Joe’s obsession with Beck becomes more intense, and he does everything he can to control every aspect of her life. Beck, on the other hand, starts to sense that something is wrong and begins to suspect that Joe is not who he appears to be. In the season finale, Beck discovers the dirty truth about Joe and his crimes, and he imprisons her in a glass cage in the bookstore’s basement. Despite her efforts to escape, Beck is ultimately killed by Joe, who stages the scene to make it look like someone else was responsible for her death.
