I think the best tattoos come when you let the artist use their talents and experience. I usually have an idea of what i want, placements. And if I know they understand my vibe, then I love just giving free reign

One of the artists at the shop I was at gave me the garlic bread from her lunch order and I helped the staff move a giant rug in the lobby when we were taking breaks lmfao

I walked after an artist told me she wouldn’t move the stencil and that she would waist money by not tattooing.. so she lost my money 🤷♀️

Is it okay to discuss a budget for a tattoo with an artist? I love to tip well but I also don’t ever know how much to bring. Is it okay to outline a rough estimate before starting?

I'm more scared of making a deposit, being unable to come to an agreement, and not getting the money back :/ my first tattoo wasnt made until I showed up for my appt and I felt cornered and unable to make changes

Is it a faux pas to ask a tattoo artist to copy another tattoo artist’s work? For example, let’s say I find a tattoo design that I absolutely love, but the original artist is too far away, too expensive, or booked solid. Is it acceptable to ask a local tattoo artist to recreate it as closely as possible, or is that generally considered disrespectful within the tattoo community?

If you are uncomfortable at any point prior to your tattoo, find a different artist. There are so many great ones, you can find the right person.

I walked into a consult because I wanted some small filler for my patchwork sleeve and help deciding what would look good/ fit in the gaps. I was prepared with several ideas/vibes on a pintrest board and she told me I just had to know which image I wanted because she wasn't going to pick for me & gave 0 input.

what's the difference between coloring in a section in black vs 1 color? why does a colored tattoo cost more even if it's just one solid color compared to a solid black?

I stopped getting tattoos after my last one because I tried a new artist in a new state and I wanted black birds up the back of my neck. not detailed, shaded in. i was like just pick a bird style and throw them on there and he would not use an ounce of creativity. I was very open that he had creative control and he was so unopen to it and not in a nice way. he was like nope. I need to know exactly what they need to look like, spacing and exact placement. my guy I cant see the back of my neck just do your thing. he said that's how Arizona artist were so I had him use some example off Google and just stopped after. I'm back in Iowa now and I feel like there's a lot more creativity here. artist ask for feedback but they get giddy at the idea of just having creative freedom. I never wanted a copy and paste tattoo. I want art.

I honestly come in with a vague idea and then give the artist free reign on interpretation and placement. It’s how I get really cool tattoos that I could never think of myself.

I don’t like being pressured by an artist either. I just want a design that is similar to what I asked for but in their style and usually it’s never in the same place that I think I want it cause it doesn’t look good when it’s placed on there. You have to be flexible as both the artist and the client.
