Meh it’s just fun. My only irritation is how many Anime cosplay there was the last time I went to one. Like if the anime takes place in Medieval-ish times, then ok why not. But why are Sailor Moon and the other scouts here?!?

What’s really funny to me is that Scottish festivals always have a few women who are dressed like they just hopped over from the Ren Fair. I don’t know who decided that the Renaissance just stayed in Scotland for forever.

it is called the renaissance because during the renaissance period there was a resurgence of love of the medieval. Art focused on fairtales, myths, etc. from the medieval period. there was an obsession on the mytic elements of the medieval period and honestly people of that period would definitely enjoy renaissance fairs because that was what they were doing back then the same we do today. we dress up and embrace the whimsical elements of the medieval period that the renaissance period popularised in the first place. the only difference is that they wouldn't call themselves of the renaissance period, that is a retrospective label we put on them. hope this helped someone to understand! I am bad at explaining but have so much thoughts in this noggin.

they are about the Renaissance, usually the English Renaissance which happened like 200ish years after the Italian Renaissance. the actors that sign entertainment contracts have costuming requirements that dictate what they can or cannot wear. however, as they have expanded and grown in popularity they have added fantasy elements which does make some sense due to the popularity of fairies and mermaids in folk tales and fairy tales that were told at the time. and we can't dictate what the patrons wear which furthers the comic con vibes.

see I think the question isn't so much why isn't the theme kept, because yeah it's fun and all. But I am also very curious why it's not named something else? where I live it's a medieval market and while medieval doesn't technically include fantasy I still find it more fitting than renaissance

As a french I've always find it a bit silly too because, well, it's my culture and I know renaissance never looked like what you can find in renfaire, but I think it's not that deep. We often have medieval faire here and almost everytime there's a fantasy side (and I won't complain because that's where I go find my clients) but it often take place in real medieval places and castles, people are untertained and learn about historycal monuments and that's what trully matter. They can come with fairy wings if it makes them happy. And I sell it to them so they're more than welcome at my stand 💕

tbh I hear the ren faire is actually about queen Elizabeth I's "Golden Age" or English renaissance so like. Post the Italian Renaissance in a lot of ways

I always thought it had to do with the fact, most of those things like wizards and mermaids and others, from stories that people told at the time, cuz at the time they accuse people being witches and pirates saw mermaids and sea monsters, and other stories like that. so the ren fair is like what if those things were actually real
