And everytime this report comes out the studios say, "We have got to do better" and that's that

A big part of that is representation. More women writers/directors need, active, connected and business savvy representation. Women are trying but the doors staying closed has a lot to do with who gets represented and who doesn’t. It starts there.

Please do a video on the lack of diversity in Bollywood films, in front of and behind the camera. Maybe a video as well on the lack of diversity in Manga, and Korean Dramas. We need those stats as well. So much hate and underrepresentation.

Often not mentioned are the lack of Studio and Network execs from underrepresented groups. Studio Execs are the ones who develop, greenlight and make final approvals on stories, writers, directors, actors, HODs. Having BIPOC studio execs could really impact having more diversity across all of this.

I co-founded an independent film company. One of our films was subsequently nominated for Best Picture. So we had some chops as to what works-most of the time. We always chose very diverse casts, strong female protagonists, and took great pride in this chemistry. As you know, films are a major export. The market and the distribution territories dictate your ROI. While WE want diversity and inclusive casts here in the US, the WORLD doesn’t always want, or understand, that concept. Try pre-selling an urban Los Angeles story and diverse cast to China, Korea, and the Middle East film markets. Horror (Sinners) is the international language. That’s why they make so many of them annually. Michael B. Jordan is also a recognized Marvel star abroad. Hence, the foreign sales alone offset production costs. The movies you mention Crazy, Rich Asians & Everything Everywhere All At Once, also did significant volume in the FOREIGN box office as well, which, as implied, is critical to an independent film’s success.

i work in hollywood, about to start casting for a series actually, but i will say I dont think diversity should ever be forced and often thats almost the reactionary ideas for these sorts of things. Fact is, we need more diveristy in stories to get greenlit. As an example, there are sooo many non white historical figures whom we can make movies on, and i much prefer that than almost tokenizing minorities which seems to be what Hollywood prefers
