A few weeks ago, I told you that in eight years of rescue, I had never seen anything like Susie First, thank you. Every single person who shared her story, left a comment, donated, or simply cared enough to follow along is the reason we were able to get her safe and into the hands of a veterinary team. Once Susie arrived at the clinic, the veterinarians immediately began trying to understand what had happened to her. Even the veterinarian was shocked. As she examined Susie, she could feel masses throughout the affected area. Not just externally, but internally as well. After sedating her and performing additional diagnostics, they incised one of the masses to determine exactly what we were dealing with. The diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma. Cancer. Extensive cancer. The heartbreaking part isn’t the diagnosis itself. The heartbreaking part is knowing this didn’t happen overnight. This wasn’t weeks. This wasn’t months. THIS WAS YEARS. YEARS of discomfort. Years of pain. Years of progressive disease. Years where this mare needed someone to intervene. People often become rightfully passionate about the visible issues they see in the horse world, and I stand beside them in those conversations. But I also wish more people would talk about horses like HER. The horses standing in a pasture, a paddock, or a backyard while a condition slowly worsens year after year without treatment, without intervention, and without anyone asking difficult questions. Those horses matter too. She deserved relief long before we met her. What brings me peace is knowing that although we couldn’t change her past, we could change her final chapter. She received love. A warm bath. A stall with shavings. Kindness. Treated like she mattered. Rest easy, sweet Susie. You deserved so much better than what happened to you, and I hope you knew, even for a little while, how much you were loved and cared about by this big amazing mercy family ❤️link in bio please 🥹🙏#foryoupage #horse #horselove #treatment #donate
