I just received a level 1 ASD diagnosis today as a 30 year old woman and I’m trying to figure out how to unmask as I was told I’m a highly effective masker 💚

The mask slipped the first time at 45, following the death of my son. The mask was shattered and fell to dust at 49, the year I lost both parents within 34 days of each other. I no longer hide who I am.

I hate the term masking. I just know a nerotypical coined that term. I prefer being highly adaptable.

I’m 40 years old and don’t know who I am. The concept of knowing who you are makes no sense to me.

Multiple studies have found that girls/women show higher levels of social emotional reciprocity, lower levels of restrictive repetitive behaviors, and higher attention to detail than boys/men. This may allow them to mask better, delaying or preventing their autism diagnosis. There's also gender bias in the assessment/assessors themselves.
