Is this quantum advantage? Honestly... Google's Willow just solved a molecular structure problem 13,000x faster than classical computers. They mapped 9-15 atom molecules in 2 hours instead of 3.2 years, and verified it with NMR. Some will argue this isn't "true" quantum advantage—classical algorithms could still improve, the molecules are small test cases, and we're not yet at pharmaceutical-scale proteins. Fair points. It’s not like the world changed overnight. But what matters to me: Three years ago, quantum computers were solving abstract benchmarks nobody cared about. Today, we're tackling real molecular problems with some sort of speedup that seems a little bit impressive - even if we can find some clever classical tricks. Does this suddenly speed up the timeline to broad quantum advantage? No. We're still some time away from error-corrected, fault-tolerant systems. Does this make me feel like we're on track? Absolutely. The gap between "interesting benchmark" and "useful” is getting closer. We are seeing this not just at Google, but other companies in the space - IBM, Quantinuum, Microsoft - all seeing interesting results that excites me. Congrats to the Google Quantum AI team. Would love to know: Does this milestone change your view on quantum's timeline, or are you still skeptical? 👇
