I was under the impression it was really any time she wasn’t thinking of him because that seems like it would be the simplest way to make her how she is. Thinking of him —freaky Nikki. Not thinking defaults to normal. Sees her reflection and her mind goes to how she looks. During the kissing or sex scenes her mind temporarily goes to the sensations she’s feeling. Breaks free at the party when she realizes how embarrassed she is. Really anytime her mind leaves Bear she defaults to her normal self

Yes its also why she hid the plant in front of her face when she passed the mirror in that one scene. Possessed Nikki realized she lost control if she looked at herself in a mirror.
