I’ll even go as far as to say that because of how they grew up as children where they never truly got to have anything they ever wanted. Now that the world is so much better than what it was before, there are moments that they still don’t get what they want. Now for the most part it’s only circumstantial. For example, something is been discontinued or they don’t have it in stock at the moment but they can order it. That is just something that’s completely out of anyone’s control in that moment. Then there are the moments, especially looking back on how they lived example my grandparents, they couldn’t afford to go out of their means they couldn’t afford to get the toy that they wanted or afford to get the clothes they want. So now when somebody tells them no, it’s just this massive “I have never gotten what I wanted since forever” thing

had my manager throw a fit at one of my co-workers because the office phone wasnt working, so my coworker couldnt request any info from outside. she was hellbent on reporting my coworker, just because she wasnt desperate to solve my manager's problem.

Gen X here. Boomers & Gen X were raised with a heavy dose of propaganda about communism & the Soviet Union. Everything we did in the world, from defense spending to what we studied at school, the fashion we wore, the foods we ate, revolved around the idea that communism was bad & we had to sacrifice to stop it. The chief argument as to why communism was bad was that it produced cheap goods & that stores were often out or had poor selection, unlike the glorious capitalist countries like America. So, now that these generations are living in what I like to call the Era of Enshittification, there is a visceral reaction to being subjected to lack of quality, lack of choice, & lack of economic opportunity, bc we were told that only communism produced such outcomes our entire lives. It’s not excusing the behavior, but I think it’s an insight younger generations miss. Also, there was a lot of lead in the diets of most boomers.

the amount of times a customer has tried to yell at me for not being able to apply a discount that’s only available on a certain day is so insane, like the computer literally won’t let me and they just start screaming at the top of their lungs

customer is always right was never a thing, the full quote is actually the customer is always right when it comes to taste, that's it...some people may try to get extra discounts or favors but that was never a given (at least not in my country) 🤷♀️

My father-in-law always brings up how Macys used to hand out carnations to customers everyday. Im like get over it. It’s 2026. If a store manager handed out flowers, customers would throw it on the floor and step on it. It’s a different world.

I know I had the problem with customers when I worked in retail in 2009 to 2015, people were absolutely ridiculous with their demands sometimes. Occasionally I got personally berated because I was a manager and I didn't greet them the way they think they should have been greeted even though I was really nice and overly friendly or would protect my employees and they didn't like that. But it has gotten exponentially worse over the past few years. I'm glad I don't work in retail now but I feel for those who do.

They aren’t in control of anything in there lives and instead of doing something about it, they just latch on to the idea that service workers are supposed to be their personal servants when they walk in to the establishment.

it's also annoying because it could be such a non issue or something really easy to fix themselves but now it's being made my problem. had someone say that a shoelace broke on their shoe and instead of just swapping the laces they come all the way to the store to complain and wanted a refund... they didn't bring the shoes with them

Same for Karens. I’m not kidding. They grew up beautiful and were never told no. Especially because they fit the western beauty standard (white, blonde, pale, blue eyed) and getting told no is new to them once they fall out of the beauty standard for the men they catered to in the patriarchy once they got older
