@keyanalawson: You can absolutely love and support Black people while being in an interracial marriage/relationship , but being pro-Black is an active, daily commitment to uplifting Black identity and resisting anti-Black structures. There’s an inherent contradiction when the person you build your closest, most intimate safe space with does not share that lived experience and, by default, benefits from the very systems you claim to be fighting. #problack

I have no problem with interracial relationships but I really hate when either party forgets who they are first and starts acting like their partner’s race as if their partner was an escape. If your relationship ends, where do you belong?

My first engagement was to a white woman back in in the 70s. She was supportive of me, truly loved me, did things for me. No woman had ever done then or since, but my allegiance to the blackness in me and what I knew would not allow me to marry this woman that was wonderful to me and my family. Even her immediate family excepted me and my mom and my sister. I just could not marry her.

When I picked my mexican partner I wasn’t thinking about the black community. I was putting myself, my future and future kids first and prioritizing that. I wasn’t doing anything to hurt my community either by being with a mexican man. So someone can definitely be pro-black without a black partner but you can also be anti-black have a non black partner. Somebody can be asexual and be pro black and never have a partner and kids to show for it. See where I’m going.
