Dad taught me controls and sent me to some PLC schools 20 years ago. One long time customer called, so dad went out. He opened the panel, saw the PLC, said it looked full and he’d get me over to diagnose it. Dad’s been gone 4 years and I’m thankful everyday he got me started in controls.

So controls are kinda like low volt access control/fire systems? I love and hate working in the industry but if you’re good and can spend 4 hours finding some bullshit fault it pays real nice.

As someone who gets called in to fix equipment that has a VFD fitted, people you MUST use shielded output cable when the manufacturer calls for it, and that’s almost always. It’s like 3-5 bucks a meter for quality stuff like Lapp’s shielded mains cable. Plus use metal glands to terminate the shield. The amount of VFD’s fed from a mains board with RCD/GFCI fitted (code requires it more and more everywhere), the output noise can and will end up on the mains feed back at the board and trip your earth leakage detector, leaving you very confused. I’ve even caught a helicopter out to ships at sea to fix this exact fault.
