Nigerian inventor and technology entrepreneur, Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, has unveiled what is being described as Africa’s first blockchain-enabled smartphone, featuring enhanced security for calls, messages and other digital communications. Ekekwe, who announced the device as part of his work with Contisx, said the phone was developed to provide individuals, businesses and governments with secure communication services built around cryptographic technology. The device is positioned as more than a conventional smartphone, with communication and financial services integrated into its ecosystem. The inventor has a background in semiconductor engineering and previously worked with Analog Devices, where he was part of a team that designed an accelerometer for the iPhone. His professional profile also states that he created the company’s first wafer-level chip-scale package for inertial sensors. “I have been building things since my days at FUTO Owerri, where we launched the university’s first campus FM radio station. In industry, I served as a global lead ASIC design engineer, helping to develop the inertial sensors used in the early versions of the iPhone.” The innovation is designed to leverage blockchain technology to provide users with a more secure communication environment, while introducing additional privacy-focused features aimed at addressing growing concerns around digital security and data protection. Beyond communication, the phone is being developed with features intended to support investment and business activities. Earlier information released by Ekekwe described zero-data access for Contisx trading and capital market services, proprietary NFC technology, multilingual support in Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Pidgin and English, as well as business tools. The company has opened preorders for the phone, with shipments scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026. Preorder customers are also being offered free access to the Tekedia Nigeria Capital Market Masterclass and the Tekedia Mini-MBA as part of the announced package.
