The fact that Noor Aziza is Rohingya does not mean she cannot speak the truth. Why is she being hated simply for raising concerns about an issue that has been discussed by human rights organizations for years? The claim about children being held in detention was not something she invented. Similar concerns have been documented and reported by human rights groups long before she spoke about it. Addressing such issues should not be viewed as spreading hate, but as bringing attention to matters that deserve public discussion and concern. People should respond to the facts and arguments being presented, rather than attacking someone because of their ethnicity or refugee status. Speaking the truth about human rights concerns should not be a reason for hatred or discrimination.

I am writing today an complaint regarding Noor Azizah Rohingya, a recipient of recognition from Marie Claire Australia, and to request that the organisation review whether she should continue to hold this recognition. My concern relates to statements she made during a graduation ceremony at the University of Sydney. In the speech, Noor Azizah made serious and damaging statements about Malaysia and its treatment of Rohingya refugees. As a Malaysian, I believe her remarks presented Malaysia in an unfair, misleading and highly one-sided manner. They appeared to disregard Malaysia's long history of receiving and providing refuge, employment opportunities, education, medical assistance and humanitarian support to members of the Rohingya community despite Malaysia not being a signatory to the "1951 Refugee Convention". Public criticism of any country is legitimate when it is accurate and supported by evidence. However, an award recipient associated with an established publication should be expected to communicate responsibly, fairly and truthfully. Statements that generalise, distort events or portray an entire country and its people negatively may cause reputational harm and contribute to hostility rather than constructive discussion. I am therefore requesting that Marie Claire Australia: 1. Review the complete recording and transcript of Noor Azizah's speech. 2. Ask her to provide evidence supporting the allegations she made about Malaysia. 3. Consider the perspectives of Malaysian organisations and communities that have assisted Rohingya refugees for many years. 4. Determine whether her conduct is consistent with the values and standards associated with the award she received. 5. Consider withdrawing or formally reviewing the award "IF" her statements are found to be misleading, unsubstantiated or inconsistent with those standards.
