Mesenteric lymphadenitis in children. What is it? It’s inflammation of the lymph nodes in the abdomen. It is often confused with appendicitis due to similar symptoms. What causes it? It’s typically triggered by a viral infection (like a cold or gastro), but sometimes by bacterial infections. What are the symptoms? Tummy pain (can be widespread or localized to the right side), fever, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes diarrhoea. It can mimic appendicitis! How do you treat it? Most cases are mild and clear up on their own. Treatment focuses on rest, fluids, and comfort such as pain relief. When to see a doctor? If the pain is severe, worsening, or not improving after a few days (or if you’re unsure if it could be appendicitis) get your child assessed. Blood in the poo, or red-jelly-like-poo also needs medical attention. Worth knowing >>> The pain can be quite severe, and in some kids it lingers for weeks or comes back with future viral illnesses.
