I went to this hackathon, and I think context is missing here. I’m writing this comment here because I genuinely enjoyed the event and I don’t want community efforts like this to disappear.
1) On representation: The routes were planned around Chinatown because that’s where the event was held, so businesses there were majority Chinese heritage. While they should definitely consider diversity and inclusiveness, people are at times limited by the contacts they have and logistical constraints. Imo the organizers were incredibly friendly people trying their best to get youth excited about heritage; they weren't purposefully trying to exclude anyone. This is more likely to be an oversight on their part. I think Chey brought up valid points, but a way to make more long-lasting change is to get involved in designing such events and make it better.
2) On banning prototypes: The organizers actually justified this. It’s to even out the playing field. They wanted to judge the idea itself, knowing not everyone can afford premium software or fancy mockup tools. Plus, many heritage business owners aren't tech-savvy, so pitching without complex software is a practical, real-world consideration.
Ultimately, it’s not a typical cutthroat comp. It achieved its primary goal—getting the younger generation to notice and care about Singapore's disappearing heritage.

I think tech hackathons usually you get to choose because there's normally just 2-3 sponsors so they aren't worried any cases wouldn't get chosen

I’m Singaporean Chinese and it irks me so much that there is not enough representation (if at all) of ALL our races and heritage. Singapore is NOT a Chinese state and the Chinese-focused selection here is disgusting.

I’m not surprised that Chinese orgs are the majority but to be ASSIGNED paths is…not a hackathon. 😭

but as a Chinese, won't u be uncomfortable doing this for another culture cause after all it's their story to tell and if u participated in it won't it feel v cultural appropriation-y?
