@annawilliamson_official: Well....it's actually happening! The UK government have announced that a social media ban for under-16's will be coming into force 👀 It's been a hot bed of discussion....would love to know your thoughts? And how this would impact your family/teens?! #uksocialban #socialmediabanuk #ukgovernment #uknews
Not in uk so unaffected but I have mixed feelings on it. Firstly it is great to get children off these platforms but how is it to be managed? Will everyone now have to submit id to verify their age? That is government overreach in my opinion. Secondly should it not be the parents responsibility to keep their children off these platforms? I have a 12 year old who has a tablet but is not allowed communicate online with anybody. I check her history and game apps regularly to ensure this is the case. She has been told she will not get access to these platforms until she is 16. This has always been our rule. If she breaks it she loses all of her access.

Great move forward. It will change the culture around how these platforms are used. Children have easy access to these platforms and this will provide the power for all parents to stop children going on them. As with everything (like smoking/ drinking) there will be some children who still get access but for the majority this will stop/limit their access. My kids are having a breakdown rn 🤣🤣🤣

I don't think it's a good idea both my kids are doing well at school never miss lessons or have time off and they use social media they are polite and helpful and don't get anything but praise. My son plays rugby and likes doing mountain biking so most of his feed is rugby or bike related and my daughter's is mainly art stuff and photos. I think the govement need to address the adults as well as that's where children are getting it from

It’s up to parents to parent their children not the government… and let’s see when adults have to provide personal information to prove they are over 18 how many people see what’s really going on

I think it is excessive what is being banned. I think it should be the tech companies that need to change.

It won't make a difference. It's like not getting your child a certain certified game... so many do. Microsoft have had a system in place for years for setting age for Xbox & websites for children. I set my son's account up as per his age. He was roughly 10 & then all his mates had adult accounts set up for them & were playing everything. He found it frustrating but I explained why, he also couldn't access too much online, Microsoft would send me details if he requested something & I had a weekly report of what he'd viewed & screen time. I could set time he could access & immediately stop access on all devices... it worked, you just have to do it right & be consistent. Let's take responsibility for our children.
Even now as an adult he & I look at our screen time & compare... I spend more time on TT😂 & my Spotify hours are embarrassing 🫣😂

Is a vital move. Next - we all need adult controls to break the doomscrolling too. As I do the same 😅

I’m all for protecting etc but they will just use a VPN which is extremely easy to do. Now they will be on unsecured websites unregulated…

I honestly don't see how this ban will stop them, won't they just lie about their age when creating the accounts or download a VPN on their phone??

Lazy parenting allows them to doom scroll. Having to upload ID none stop. Ridiculous idea.
