s9e4 is actually a flashback and it’s evil morty, their house has a gazebo that’s only present in evil morty’s dimension and there’s no graves from when the main cast moved to parmesan dimension (plus evil morty’s rick was much more alcoholic than c-137, which tracks with this episode)

I saw a theory saying it was the time police viewing evil morties past, especially if you see the canopy in the backyard and the lack of the pool, it makes sense. We also see the Rick drink a LOT more than we've seen C137 drink in a single episode

It did feel odd to me that there was a different company that made the bunker. It adds to the feeling that Rick is less intelligent in this ep. And he’s drinking so damn much, it was genuinely surprising even for the norm. Not only are there screencaps without the pool, which could just be an animation error, every episode before this mentioned and prominently featured the pool. That detracts from the idea that the pool being missing is a simple mistake.

I normally hate the "It's not Rick, it's a robot" or the "We're actually still in the hole" shenanigans R&M fans sometimes pull because it undermines Rick and Morty's character growth(and people who usually believe those stuff still think Rick is the edgy hateful man that he is back in season 1). Similarly, I didn't believe the whole "Evil Morty flashback" people kept saying for the new episode— but I'm actually kinda doubtful right now😭 Rick did show care to Morty but at the same time he reverted back to bad habits, which we haven't seen him do after striving to be better by deleting Diane in his memories. TLDR: I'm not so sure anymore, I don't wanna believe the "It's not actually our Rick and Morty" theory but the theory somehow holds weight and idk how to feel about that😭

I think Episode 8 debunked this theory, because rick explicitly acknowledged the events of Rick Prime's death, he used Morty as bait, and he's now killed the fish (killing rick prime), meaning this rick IS rick C-137

I would prefer it make more sense to believe that Morty is spiraling down the same path to Evil Morty. The backstory and all the clues up to this point were warnings of eventually makes Morty assertive and choose for himself while “caring” for Rick as much as he can. But unlike Evil Morty who saw it as Rick vs Morty, it’s Rick vs himself and he can be there for him but he can’t help him..

nah you're right the theory is dumb, the reason why rick is showing more emotional growth is because he's not hung up on rick prime anymore and got rid of the omega device shown from the recent episode, he's now able to connect with his family freely without vengeance tryna fuel him and without the fear of losing them, they're basically immortal under rick's supervision, and now serve as his eternal therapy and recovery from losing diane

this episode had way too many setups for it not to be an evil morty episode 1. the gazebo that matches with evil morty’s dimension 2. ricks insane drinking problem 3. rick saying how his drinking was genetic even though rick c-137 and morty prime aren’t related 4. entirely different defenses systems 5. no pool or mention of the pool even though rick said this was a “pool season” 6. similar tech to evil morty, force field and energy blasts 7. different tech from rick c-137, such as the eye scope. there’s just too much evidence

Honestly the thing driving home to me that this wasn’t our R&M is Rick wasn’t really smart…a different company made his bunker, he needed to call a locksmith to unlock the hatch, his tech seemed a little dulled down. Also small things like him randomly drinking like crazy, the lockdown bunker looks different from previous episodes, the pool seemingly missing and never being mentioned…too many things for it to be a coincidence
