It is cause rats used to eat the wooden once ( the original once) so they added the gap to still see the measurements

And also in case thereโs a miss production, and the numbers get printed like 0.2 or sum cm off it will still all be on the ruler

the real reason is probably cost, not confort, or any other excuse. starting graduation exactly from the start is more complicated, and thus more expensive. here, we don't care if the start of off by a few millimeters.

as a carpentar im not "burning an inch" always use the same ruler or tape. if not its so minor that it doesnt matter that much
