@itvnews: A World Cup video assistant referee who faced backlash after making a hand gesture resembling a white supremacist sign, has said he was "unaware" he made it and it was an "involuntary, subconscious twitch". Australian referee Shaun Evans was cleared by Fifa after he was found not to have breached football's disciplinary code, when he was seen making the symbol during the opening of Germany's 7-1 win over Curaçao on Sunday June 14th. Despite being cleared, a monitoring network that works with Fifa has called for Evans to be removed from the tournament. The upside down "OK" symbol was appropriated a decade ago as a signal for white supremacy, and has been adopted by some far-right groups. #worldcup2026 #football #hand #referee #VAR
