Gwyneth Paltrow is facing immense criticism, with people calling her the “genocide queen” after she starred in a commercial promoting a luxury apartment complex in Israel despite its genocide in Gaza. On June 7, Israeli real estate company Aviv Melisron, which owns a commercial real estate project in the illegal Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim in the occupied West Bank, posted a video to its social media accounts featuring Paltrow, promoting its project 51 Park. 51 Park is two 51-story towers in Herzliya, a coastal city north of Tel Aviv named after Theodor Herzl, founder of modern Zionism and was founded by Zionist settlers in the 1920s after expelling Palestinians from the Palestinian villages of Ijlil and al-Haram, according to Al Jazeera. Units in 51 Park reportedly cost up to US$10 million. In the clip, which was filmed in New York, the 53-year-old Oscar winning actor wakes up in a sleek, high-rise apartment with views of a park, asking, “Who decided mornings should be so early? Even my coffee needs a coffee” before she heads for a “brutal” morning run. She then says that waking up early for a jog in the park is a price she’s willing to pay. "There's a reason the world's most iconic buildings are by a park," she says to the camera before asking her driver to take her to "51 Park." When the driver asks if she means New York, she replies, "Herzliya, Israel." “To bring this architectural masterpiece to the Israeli audience, we needed a figure who effortlessly embodies international elegance, a premium lifestyle, and uncompromising quality,” the ceo of Why Worry, a creative agency in Tel Aviv that produced the advertisement, said. The ad has since sparked huge backlash online, with people calling it “tone deaf” as the project is situated just 70 kilometers away from Gaza, where Israel is still committing its genocide, bombing and imposing a blockade on the Strip.
