@sayitoncedogtraining: It’s important to not repeat your commands, but it’s just as important to get away from luring your dog or needing a hand signal every single time you ask them to do something. When you first teach a command, most dogs go through three phases. First, you lure them into position with food. Then, you use the same hand motion without food in your hand to help guide them. Eventually, the goal is to simply say the command and give your dog time to process what you’re asking. This is where a lot of owners get stuck. They say “down,” but their hand is still doing all the work. The dog is not really listening to the verbal command yet, they are following the picture your body is creating. That is fine in the beginning, but it should not be where you live forever. Say the command, stay quiet, and let your dog think. When you go through this process correctly, you will start to see your dog get faster and faster at responding to only your verbal command. Also, notice she does not pay the dog when they pop up from the down. That is huge. Reward the behavior you want, not the mistake that happens after it. For people who’s dog walks away from them or just won’t listen, try putting on a leash and gently tug down (or giving them a push start you could say). This works when the dog is very new to the trick, when it already knows it then this stuff doesn’t work too well especially if you want it to work without the leash

My puppy straight just walks away from me when giving commands. For anything. Treats, toys. I tried an even higher value treat or toy and she just lunges for it while I'm waiting for her to 'process' what I said.

How do I get my dog to drop a scrunchie the first time I say it because she knows what it means she just doesn’t do it unless I get a treat or I get it out of her mouth but sometimes I can’t because she’ll close her mouth really tight

What if “waiting” can be up to 3 minutes and dog forgets the command? Waiting doesn’t work for my Shiba 😂

I get it and it’s worked for my smaller dog but I rescued a husky from the street and when I only say it once and wait no matter what I have it’s apparently not high value enough bc he just walks away. 😑😅

Can someone help me, I have never said the commands more than once. And I’ve done that since 8 weeks, today he’s soon 8 months. And he can still not do the commands directly and just testing me. Sometimes ofc he’s very good. What can I do?

Skye :
command wait a few minutes, give a visual reminder of what the verbal means.
dogs learn physical cues before verbal, you can give a visual reminder especially if you feel they have forgotten the command - or are still not 100% in their recognition of verbals. it's a good way to teach verbals too
