The Story of the Battle of Karbala (680 AD) After the death of Muawiya, the founder of the Umayyad state who ruled after the martyrdom of Ali ibn Abi Talib, Muawiya’s son demanded that Imam Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib pledge allegiance to him. Imam Hussein refused, due to the corruption and deviation that had spread within the state. Imam Hussein decided to leave Medina (in present-day Saudi Arabia), accompanied by his family and a small group of supporters, heading toward Iraq. Before reaching his destination, the caravan was stopped on the land of Karbala in Iraq, where Imam Hussein and his family were surrounded. They were a small group facing a massive army of Ibn Muawiya, made up of thousands of fighters. Water was cut off from them, yet they remained firm and did not retreat. Imam Hussein and his companions stood with honor, defending truth and justice, one by one, until Imam Hussein was left alone. With his martyrdom, the battle ended… but the cause did not. After the tragedy, Lady Zainab, the sister of Imam Hussein, was taken captive along with the children. She did not collapse, and she did not remain silent. She spoke with courage and exposed what had happened, though only a few believed her. Lady Ruqayyah, the young daughter of Imam Hussein, kept asking about her father, unaware of what had happened to him. After learning of his death, she passed away shortly afterward from grief. After this event, people became divided into two groups: one that honored the cause, and another that despised it.
