The core Wulingyuan Scenic Area covers Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and Shili Gallery. The Hallelujah Mountains floating in the movie Avatar were modeled after the Qiankun Pillar located in Yuanjiajie. There are also Tianmen Mountain with its miraculous natural mountain cave piercing through the mountain, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon home to the skywalk glass bridge and mountain streams, Huanglong Cave known as an underground dragon palace, and Baofeng Lake featuring serene mountain and lake views. Within one region, you can enjoy an endless variety of landscapes all at once. 380 million years ago, this entire area was a deep ocean. Millions of years of sediment built up a 500-meter-thick layer of pure quartz sandstone. After crustal uplift turned the seabed into land, centuries of flowing water erosion, wind weathering and rock collapses carved out three thousand sheer, isolated stone pillars. When mist drifts through the mountains, the stone peaks hover like an extraterrestrial wonderland. Thanks to this one-of-a-kind fantastical landform, it has been inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List.
