On 16 June 1976, thousands of Black schoolchildren took to the streets of Soweto in a peaceful protest against apartheid education policies. Then the police opened fire. Children aged just 13, 14 and 15 were shot in the streets. Hundreds were killed, many under the age of 18. The uprising became a turning point in the struggle against apartheid and helped awaken the world to the brutality of the regime.
