@joynsmith: He got one heck of a call. But did you know that the USA is hosting the 2026 World Cup and I’m genuinely happy about it in a way I haven’t felt about much lately. It’s not just sports. For the first time in a long while, something big and positive is happening in this country that makes me feel proud instead of embarrassed or anxious. Co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, games all across the U.S. — Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Miami, Boston, Seattle, you name it. The opening match is in Mexico City, the final in New Jersey, and we’re getting a ton of the group stages and knockout rounds. It feels massive. I’ve been watching highlights and announcement videos like a kid. The stadiums look insane. SoFi Stadium, MetLife, Mercedes-Benz — they’re turning these places into football cathedrals for a month. I keep imagining the atmosphere: massive crowds chanting, American flags everywhere, the energy in the air. Even as someone who’s mostly a casual fan, it hits different when it’s happening here. I’m happy because for once the news isn’t all bad. It’s not another political fight or economic complaint. It’s something fun, something unifying. I already picture myself trying to get tickets to a game in Boston or maybe taking a cheap bus to New York. Even if I can’t afford it, just knowing it’s coming feels good. The country is going to be loud, chaotic, full of tourists, and for a summer we’ll all be talking about the same thing instead of screaming at each other. It makes me feel hopeful in a small way. I’m 28, broke, stuck at home, but there’s something exciting about knowing that in a few months the eyes of the world are going to be on America for something beautiful instead of something broken. Maybe I’ll be in a better spot by then. Maybe I’ll be working and can actually enjoy it properly. Or maybe I’ll still be here on the couch watching every match like it’s my full-time job. Either way, I’m smiling more when I think about it. The World Cup is coming to America. And for the first time in a long time, that actually feels like something worth celebrating.
