@scott.austin.martin: Most men don't struggle to understand women because women are complicated. They struggle because they're listening for errors instead of listening for feelings. A lot of men hear their partner say something and immediately think: "That's not what happened. That's not what I meant. That's not fair." And before they've even understood her experience, they're already building a defense. If you're defending your image, explaining your intent, or trying to fix the conversation so YOU can feel better — you're not trying to understand her. You're trying to get out of discomfort. The goal isn't agreement. The goal isn't proving who's right. The goal is to see and feel what she sees and feels. Understanding another person's feelings can feel threatening when your nervous system was trained to protect itself from criticism, shame, or conflict. So defensiveness shows up. Explaining. Withdrawing. Fixing. Not because you're a bad man. Because an old survival strategy is running the show. The work is calming your nervous system enough that her feelings stop feeling like a threat. When understanding no longer feels dangerous, empathy becomes available.
